ACT Scores
As mentioned earlier this week, our ACT scores from last year are in and we are at the top with a Composite score of 23.5… Congratulations! This great news comes on top of the phenomenal results we had on the AP Exams – an 81% passage rate! Attached you will find a comparison of our scores that shows how we stand in relationship to Lee County, the State of Florida, and the US as a whole. Please feel free to share and discuss these results. Here are some key points to understand when reviewing the scores:

  • 87% of the 2010 Senior Class took the ACT last year.
  • This is the highest Composite Score average for Bishop Verot to date.
  • Our Composite Score was 23.5, Lee County - 19.5, State of Florida – 19, & National 21.

Students take oath to live by honor code

Bishop Verot Catholic High School is a community of faith and learning, dedicated to the observance of honor as demonstrated through honesty, trustworthiness, fairness, and respect for others. Students share with teachers and administration the responsibility for promoting a climate of integrity. Students are expected to adhere to these core values at all times, in both their academic and non‐academic activities.

Students Honored at Academic Banquet
This spring, Bishop Verot honored 47 students for earning Principal's List (4.25 GPA and above) for the first three quarters of the school year.

Out of the 14 seniors who earned Principal's List, five students were recognized for earning Principal's List for all four years at Bishop Verot.

Verot students receive top awards at art show
Bishop Verot students recently competed in the Lee County Alliance of the Arts Student Juried Art Show with thirteen other high schools from Lee County. Stephanie LoSauro took home first place for her black and white photograph of her brother and Christina Stewart took home third place for her black and white photograph of her grandfather.

Bishop Verot had five other students place in the top ten, congratulations to Kenny Erikson, Emma Clinger, Justynne Wheeler, Kim Hojecki, and Morgan Sonntag.

Stations of the Cross
Students gathered in the senior courtyard on Wednesday afternoon for the Stations of the Cross. For Catholics, the Stations are a way for the faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through meditating upon the chief scenes of Christ's suffering and death. Campus Ministry will present the Stations of the Cross every Wednesday in the Senior Courtyard through Lent.National Honor Society Inductions
The Bishop Verot Chapter of the National Honor Society held its 2010 induction ceremony on Sunday, February 28th. 47 students were inducted in to NHS. Students must have a 3.75 cumulative GPA and approved by faculty and staff before being invited in.

Meghan Barton signs with Nova
Bishop Verot senior Megan Barton signed her letter of intent to play Division II soccer at Nova Southeastern University. Barton, a defender for the Vikings, was a four year letterman and three year starter and completed her senior season with 7 goals on 19 shots and 4 assists.

Kevin Moyer and Chryssie GibsonBishop Verot sophomores Kevin Mosher and Chryssie Gibson work on their ester chemistry fragance lab on Tuesday. The class was combining organic acids with isoamyl and isobutyl alcohols to create different scents ranging from lemon to wintergreen.

Kayley Clay Signs Letter of Intent with Lynn
Bishop Verot senior Kayley Clay signed her letter of intent to play Division II Soccer with the Fighting Knights at Lynn University in Boca. Clay is a four year soccer letterman and three year starter with the Vikings and was named to the News-Press all area team in 2009. Clay finished out the 2009-2010 soccer season with 17 goals, 46 points, and 62 shots.

DNA Biotechnology introduced in the classroom
Bishop Verot senior Gerard Mulles pulls a practice sample during a DNA Gel Electrophoresis lab in AP Anatomy and Physiology class. DNA biotechnology is used in research, medical and forensic settings. This technology allows students the ability to separate fragments of DNA as well as study their results both qualitatively and quantitatively. Examples of this technology is used in gene testing as well as forensic DNA fingerprinting.  Most students do not have access to this technology until well into their college careers, but it is now available to students here at Bishop Verot.

Jeff Farrell signs with Walsh University

Bishop Verot senior Jeff Farrell signed his letter of intent to play Division II football with the Cavaliers at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio. During his senior season, Jeff was one of the leading receivers in Southwest Florida through the first five games when an injury sidelined him. Farrell would later return for the Vikings as a safety.

Students Celebrate Robbie Burns Day
On Friday, Mrs. Dakin's British Literature honors classes celebrated Robbie Burns Day, a Scottish holiday celebrating the birthday of the famed poet and writer. The day was met with traditional costumes, music, poems, dancing, and the reciting and presentation of Address To A Haggis served with Scotland's National Dish.

Throughout the day, students performed the Scottish jig and sang "Auld Lang Syne" in the Bishop Verot dance studio.
Mrs. Vocu receives Christ the Teacher Award
Monday morning, the Bishop Verot community gathered in the Anderson Theater to start off Catholic Schools Week to honor the faculty and staff. Each year, Bishop Verot students nominate teachers for the Christ the Teacher Award, an that recognizes teachers who embody the spirit of Bishop Verot Catholic High School.

Mrs. Michele Vocu was selected by students to be the recipient of the 2010 Christ the Teacher Award. Mrs. Vocu works in both the Science and Mathematics Departments and is now in her eighth year of teaching at Bishop Verot.

Boys Varstiy Soccer team ranked 22 in the nation
Bishop Verot's boys soccer team (23-1-2) jumped to #22 in the nation rankings by ESPN Rise. The boys soccer team entered the rankings at #33 in week six after defeating American Heritage of Miami. Last week, ESPN Rise ranked the team at #24. The Vikings carry an ten-match win streak after defeating Berkley Prep on Friday night. The boys go on to the state semi-finals on Thursday in Tampa.

Bishop Verot announces National Merit Scholars
Bishop Verot Catholic High School is proud to announce its 2010 National Merit Scholars. Griffin Howe, a Verot senior, has been named a National Merit semi-finalist joining 16,000 other semi-finalists across the nation competing.

Jimmy Shannon, Nancy Sprehn, Kevin Moyer, Kyle Ficker and Amy Schwartz have all been named Commended Students in the 2010 program. These students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition.

Students celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany

Bishop Verot junior Mariel Rickert writes the customary numerals of the year and initials of the Three Wise Men - Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar - on the doors of classrooms on the Feast of the Epiphany. The letter C, M, and B also abbreviate the Latin words "Christus mansionem benedicat" or "May Christ bless the house."

Rickert was selected along with junior Emma Clinger and senior Jessica Bevillard to be the three kings at the Feast of the Epiphany mass last week. The three students inscribed 20 + C + M + B + 10 on all of the doors at Bishop Verot and were each granted one wish.

Mosher and Brown selected as top 100 volleyball players in country
Bishop Verot senior Libero, Katie Mosher and Setter, Ciarra Brown have been named to the National AVCA High School All American Top 100 List for 2009. Additionally, Katie Mosher recently earned the State of Florida AVCA "Player of the Week" for week Nov.8th-15th. Ciarra Brown was selected as the FACA District 3A "Player of the Year" and Katie Mosher, also on the FACA All Area District Team was selected to the FACA State of Florida "All Star" Team as one of 2 Liberos across the state and will compete in the FACA State All Star match on Dec.5th in Newport Ritchey, Florida. Congratulations to both Ciarra and Katie who also both recently signed National Letters of Intent to play NCAA Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth and Florida State University respectively.

Students visit Ringling Estate
The Ringling EstateStudents from Ms. Steger's Creative Photography II class recently visited the Ringling Estate in Sarasota. During their time at the estates, students completed two photo assignments - an architectural assignment using black and white film and a floral assignment using a digital camera. Read more.

Dan Krispinsky signs with Florida Southern
Bishop Verot senior Dan Krispinsky signed his letter of intent to play lacrosse at Florida Southern College on Thursday. Dan has been a starter on the lacrosse team at Bishop Verot since his freshman year and has led the team in scoring all three seasons thus far with a total of 133 goals. During his junior year, Dan was one of the first Southwest Florida lacrosse players selected to be on the 18+ National Florida team. Read more from the News-Press.

Stephanie Peacock signs with UNC
Stephanie PeacockOn Monday, Bishop Verot senior Stephanie Peacock signed a letter of intent to swim at UNC Chapel Hill. Peacock won two state swim titles this past weekend in Orlando, placing first in the 200 and 500 yard free breaking Verot's previous record. This is Stephanie's second state title, in 2007 she won the 500 free as a sophomore. On Monday, Chase Marinell was the fifth Bishop Verot athlete to sign a letter of intent with a Division 1 program. Chase signed on to play golf at Liberty University. For the past two years Chase has been one of the top 5 high school golfers in the state of Florida. "Chase is probably the very best golfer ever at Verot” said Coach Mike Reese. In his four years at Verot, Chase has won many important amateur golf titles and qualified for prestigious national tournaments. Katlyn Payne signs with FGCU

On Friday, Bishop Verot senior Katlyn Payne signed her letter of intent to play basketball at Florida Gulf Coast University next year. Payne is a new addition to the Vikings after moving to Fort Myers from Chicago with her family last summer. In the past three years, Katlyn has averaged more than 15 points and six rebounds. Environmental students visit Babcock Ranch
Environmental students visit Babcock Ranch and Telegraph Swamp.Students from Mrs. Bergau's Environmental Science classes took Swamp Buggy tours of Babcock Ranch and Telegraph Cypress Swamp last week. Set on 90,000 acres in both Lee and Charlotte counties, the ranch and surrounding swamps offers views of everything from alligators to panthers to cracker cattle. Click here for pictures.

Kevin Jordan qualifies for states
Last week, Bishop Verot senior Kevin Jordan competed in the Regional Cross Country meet in Tampa setting a new personal record, Kevin finished the 5k race with a time of 16:54 placing 14th and qualifying for states. Kevin competed in the state cross country championship today in Miami. We will keep you posted on his performance.

Ciara Brown signed her letter of intent to play Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth University on November 12thOn Thursday, Bishop Verot senior Ciara Brown signed a letter-of-intent to play Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth University. Brown, a setter for the Vikings, is the FACA District 16-3A Player of the Year with over 715 assists in the 2009 season.

Bishop Verot students welcome Veterans
Bishop Verot held an assembly on Tuesday to honor all Veterans that have served this country. Six local Veterans took time to share their experiences of serving in our military. Chief Corpsman Del Cochran of the US Navy, Kathy Nicholson of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Pete Nicholson a Vietnam Vet and State Junior Vice Commander of the VFW, Charles Sanders a US Air Force Korean War Vet, Charlie Gillis a Marine Corps Vet (and our Bishop Verot security guard), and Elmer Renk a World War II US Army Air Force were all present. Cast prepares for opening night
Cast members from the upcoming Bishop Verot production of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor wait off stage for their cue during Wednesday's rehearsal. The show opens TONIGHT at 7:30 PM for its weekend long run in the Anderson Theater. Show times are Friday, November 20th and Saturday, November 21st at 7:30 PM and Sunday, November 22nd at 2:00 PM. Swim team prepare for State Championship

Bishop Verot's swim team has once again qualified for the State finals. The Class A finals start Saturday in Orlando. Verot's Stephanie Peacock will swim the 200 free and 500 free, Derek Krell will swim the 200 free and 100 free, Kyle Ficker with swim the 50 free and 100 free, McKenzie Cassidy will swim the 100 free and 100 breast, and Kristen Goodson will swim the 100 back. Mary Neihaus and Danielle Russell will swim the 400 Relay.

Rivals for Rations
Bishop Verot Catholic High School and Fort Myers High School wrapped up its Rivals for Rations program last Friday. The two schools collected canned food for CCMI, a local soup kitchen during the week. Fort Myers High School collected 1,100 lbs of food and Bishop Verot collected 4,500 lbs of food. CCMI officials estimate that the 5,600 lbs of food collected will feed over 2,000 people.

Sophomore soccer player Kady Otzko named Breeze Player of the Week

In his six years guiding Bishop Verot, coach Randy Zavada has seen his share of prolific goal scorers. While it might be too early to include Otzko among that elite group, the Vikings no doubt are expecting increased scoring production from their sophomore forward.

Otzko opened this season with three goals in each of the Vikings' three wins over Charlotte, Evangelical Christian and Cardinal Mooney.

The most impressive stat, Zavada said, is Otzko scored nine goals on only 15 shots. She's making the most of her chances.

Volleyball team moves on to Regional Finals

The girls volleyball team defeated Desoto in three sets 25-18, 25-10, 25-19, Desoto’s first home loss in over two years! Katie Mosher led with 27 digs and 4 aces, Sarah Toggweiler with 15 kills, and Ciara Brown with 32 assists. The team is now 27-0 and will host Berkley Prep this Saturday in the Regional Finals. Come support your girls this Saturday at 2:00-help us black out the gym and go after Berkley!

Students prepare for Veterans Day
Veterans Day is Wednesday, and Bishop Verot students are preparing by creating crosses for their lockers. The crosses have the names of loved ones who have served honorably in the military.

On Tuesday, a special assembly will be held with the entire student body and Veterans from the VFW branch on Fort Myers Beach who will share their experiences.

Learning Resource Lab adds new software
Students work on Skills Tutor, a new computer program introduced to the Bishop Verot Resource Lab last week. Skills Tutor is a supplemental tool designed to help students master core fundamental skills and advanced learning concepts.

The purchase of this program for the Resource Lab was made possible by the generous support of Mr. Adam Hall '94.

Three students take home art awards

Three Bishop Verot students recently took home awards from the Cape Coral Neighbordhood Watch art contest. High School students from Cape Coral and Fort Myers competed in the contest. Alexandra Schol, a sophomore at Bishop Verot, took home 1st place for her poster titled "Break the Wall." Emilie Gonzalez, a sophomore at Bishop Verot, took home 3rd place and Tierney Berry, a junior at Bishop Verot, was awarded 4th place.

Marine biology students took a field trip to Lake Gill to conduct basic oceanographic/marine field techniques. The students first identified their location using a hand held GPS then they took the temperature, salinity, visibility, and water samples from the lake. CHEERLEADERS BRING HOME TOP AWARDS
The Bishop Verot Varsity and JV cheer teams traveled to Rollins College in Winter Park to attend UCA Cheer Camp the week of July 20th.

During the Camp Championships, Varsity won first place for their home routine dance, first place for extreme routine and second place for team cheer. They were also given a superior trophy for getting the highest rating on all their routines throughout the week. Bishop Verot's varsity squad also won the team traditions award for displaying leadership on and off the field. Melissa King and Ashley Wilkinson were chosen as All-Americans and were invited to cheer in London. Ashley and Keirsten Sekeres were chosen for individual cheer awards for demonstrating leadership, spirit, commitment to excellence, kindness and motivation. Andrew Palumbo '11, a forward for the Vikings, was recently named 3A Soccer Player of the Year. Palumbo finished the season with 44 goals and 23 assists, helping lead the Vikings to a 26-1-2 record and the Class 3A state soccer title.

In addition to this state wide award, Andrew was recently named New-Press Soccer player of the year and is now a finalist for the 2010 Soccer Player of the Year amongst all five state classifications.

Meghan Barton signs with Nova
Bishop Verot senior Megan Barton signed her letter of intent to play Division II soccer at Nova Southeastern University. Barton, a defender for the Vikings, was a four year letterman and three year starter and completed her senior season with 7 goals on 19 shots and 4 assists.


Kayley Clay Signs Letter of Intent with Lynn
Bishop Verot senior Kayley Clay signed her letter of intent to play Division II Soccer with the Fighting Knights at Lynn University in Boca. Clay is a four year soccer letterman and three year starter with the Vikings and was named to the News-Press all area team in 2009. Clay finished out the 2009-2010 soccer season with 17 goals, 46 points, and 62 shots.

Jeff Farrell signs with Walsh University

Bishop Verot senior Jeff Farrell signed his letter of intent to play Division II football with the Cavaliers at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio. During his senior season, Jeff was one of the leading receivers in Southwest Florida through the first five games when an injury sidelined him. Farrell would later return for the Vikings as a safety.

Boys Varstiy Soccer team ranked 22 in the nation
Bishop Verot's boys soccer team (23-1-2) jumped to #22 in the nation rankings by ESPN Rise. The boys soccer team entered the rankings at #33 in week six after defeating American Heritage of Miami. Last week, ESPN Rise ranked the team at #24. The Vikings carry an ten-match win streak after defeating Berkley Prep on Friday night. The boys go on to the state semi-finals on Thursday in Tampa.

Mosher and Brown selected as top 100 volleyball players in country
Bishop Verot senior Libero, Katie Mosher and Setter, Ciarra Brown have been named to the National AVCA High School All American Top 100 List for 2009. Additionally, Katie Mosher recently earned the State of Florida AVCA "Player of the Week" for week Nov.8th-15th. Ciarra Brown was selected as the FACA District 3A "Player of the Year" and Katie Mosher, also on the FACA All Area District Team was selected to the FACA State of Florida "All Star" Team as one of 2 Liberos across the state and will compete in the FACA State All Star match on Dec.5th in Newport Ritchey, Florida. Congratulations to both Ciarra and Katie who also both recently signed National Letters of Intent to play NCAA Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth and Florida State University respectively.

Dan Krispinsky signs with Florida Southern
Bishop Verot senior Dan Krispinsky signed his letter of intent to play lacrosse at Florida Southern College on Thursday. Dan has been a starter on the lacrosse team at Bishop Verot since his freshman year and has led the team in scoring all three seasons thus far with a total of 133 goals. During his junior year, Dan was one of the first Southwest Florida lacrosse players selected to be on the 18+ National Florida team. Read more from the News-Press.

Stephanie Peacock signs with UNC
Stephanie PeacockOn Monday, Bishop Verot senior Stephanie Peacock signed a letter of intent to swim at UNC Chapel Hill. Peacock won two state swim titles this past weekend in Orlando, placing first in the 200 and 500 yard free breaking Verot's previous record. This is Stephanie's second state title, in 2007 she won the 500 free as a sophomore. Chase Marinell signs with Liberty
On Monday, Chase Marinell was the fifth Bishop Verot athlete to sign a letter of intent with a Division 1 program. Chase signed on to play golf at Liberty University. For the past two years Chase has been one of the top 5 high school golfers in the state of Florida. "Chase is probably the very best golfer ever at Verot” said Coach Mike Reese. In his four years at Verot, Chase has won many important amateur golf titles and qualified for prestigious national tournaments. Katlyn Payne signs with FGCU

On Friday, Bishop Verot senior Katlyn Payne signed her letter of intent to play basketball at Florida Gulf Coast University next year. Payne is a new addition to the Vikings after moving to Fort Myers from Chicago with her family last summer. In the past three years, Katlyn has averaged more than 15 points and six rebounds. Katlyn is the third Verot athlete to sign on with a Division 1 program. For more on Katlyn's signing, click here.

Kevin Jordan qualifies for states
Last week, Bishop Verot senior Kevin Jordan competed in the Regional Cross Country meet in Tampa setting a new personal record, Kevin finished the 5k race with a time of 16:54 placing 14th and qualifying for states. Kevin competed in the state cross country championship today in Miami. We will keep you posted on his performance.

On Wednesday, Bishop Verot senior Katie Mosher signed a letter of intent to play Division 1 volleyball at FSU. Mosher, a libero for the Vikings, leads the team in aces, digs and receptions.

Ciara Brown signs with Virginia Commonwealth
Ciara Brown signed her letter of intent to play Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth University on November 12thOn Thursday, Bishop Verot senior Ciara Brown signed a letter-of-intent to play Division 1 volleyball at Virginia Commonwealth University. Brown, a setter for the Vikings, is the FACA District 16-3A Player of the Year with over 715 assists in the 2009 season.

Swim team prepare for State Championship

Bishop Verot's swim team has once again qualified for the State finals. The Class A finals start Saturday in Orlando. Verot's Stephanie Peacock will swim the 200 free and 500 free, Derek Krell will swim the 200 free and 100 free, Kyle Ficker with swim the 50 free and 100 free, McKenzie Cassidy will swim the 100 free and 100 breast, and Kristen Goodson will swim the 100 back. Mary Neihaus and Danielle Russell will swim the 400 Relay.

Volleyball team moves on to Regional Finals

The girls volleyball team defeated Desoto in three sets 25-18, 25-10, 25-19, Desoto’s first home loss in over two years! Katie Mosher led with 27 digs and 4 aces, Sarah Toggweiler with 15 kills, and Ciara Brown with 32 assists. The team is now 27-0 and will host Berkley Prep this Saturday in the Regional Finals. Come support your girls this Saturday at 2:00-help us black out the gym and go after Berkley!

Sophomore soccer player Kady Otzko named Breeze Player of the Week

In his six years guiding Bishop Verot, coach Randy Zavada has seen his share of prolific goal scorers. While it might be too early to include Otzko among that elite group, the Vikings no doubt are expecting increased scoring production from their sophomore forward.

Otzko opened this season with three goals in each of the Vikings' three wins over Charlotte, Evangelical Christian and Cardinal Mooney.

The most impressive stat, Zavada said, is Otzko scored nine goals on only 15 shots. She's making the most of her chances.
